Margoschis Hr. Sec. School

The town Nazareth had a humble beginning. Almost 200 years ago in 1803, a small Christian colony was established here; and Rev. Aerion was the person who brought the Good news of our Lord Jesus Christ to this place. In 1839, an elementary school was started for boys and girls. This school began growing ever since. In the year 1880 the school was raised to a Higher Grade Middle school. Then in 1887 Rev. Cannon Arthur Margoschis made it a High School. But in 1890 the school was degraded to Higher Grade Middle School, when the high school classes were attached to Caldwell School. Thoothukudi. However it was upgraded again as high school in 1930. In 1909 this school becomes a Government recognized Middle School. Until 1912 this school remained a Model school for Higher Grade Teacher Trainees. Then in the year 1932 this school was again upgraded to be a High school. New buildings were built in the years 1935.1937. 1941. 1951, 1972 and 1977.It was S.A. Thomas who toiled in the school for 18 long years, made the school the Role Model. The buildings and hostel were given a new shape. He is fondly commended and adored by the old boys, the people of Nazareth and villages around Nazareth. There was a Model Paddy field in the school. It became a higher secondary school in 1978. The motto of the school is “Learn, Labour and be lighted”.

St. John’s Girl's Hr. Sec. School

St. John's Girl’s Hr. Sec. School which is like a light house which gives light of knowledge in Thoothukudi District, is the first school in south India and a third one in India, which was started for girls. It was started by Rev. Hough in 1820. It was upgraded into St. John's Girls High School in 1886, by the sacrifice and task of many English missionaries Rev. Camerar, Green, Swingler and Evans showed much interest in the development of the school and worked for it. St. Michael, St. Gabriel and Guardian Angels hostels were built. The chapel was built by the efforts of Rev. G.T. Selwyn and dedicated to the service of God in 1939. It was upgraded into Hr. Sec. School in 1978. Homes run by KNII and world vision are also here and many poor girls arc benefited by them. The motto of the school is “To Love is to serve” 1600 girl’s arc studying here and there arc forty three teachers working here. NCC, Red Cross, Bharat Scout & Guides, NSS, Sunday Class and Prayer Group Programmes arc conducted here successfully.

St. John's Teacher Training Institute

Rev. Margoschis started a teacher training school as a part of Girls school at Nazareth. It was called lower grade Training. Those who completed IV Form got the teacher training. The rural school which was started by Rev. Hough in 1891 becomes the model school for this training school. Later in the year 1900, the Higher Grade Training classes Thoothukudi was transferred to Nazareth by the efforts' of Rev. Margoschis, and was run successfully with the help of S.P.C.K Mission with the tireless efforts of Miss. Evans and Miss. Swingler the training school was successful in academic as well as spiritual activities. From 1931 onwards buildings were constructed in the school campus. St. Gabriel Hostel for Teacher Training Girls and Guardian Angels Hostels for lower grade girls were completed in 1943. They were opened by Dr. Ruby Vethapothagam, Miss. Elia, Miss. Randle and Miss. R. John. The chapel was also dedicated by Rev. G.T. Selwyn in 1938. In 1933 classrooms for Kindergarten and Teacher Training were built. Kindergarten classes were opened by Miss. E. Western (Sister of Bishop F. Western). From 1943 onwards the training school was administered by women alone. The high school classes were conducted in the upper rooms and the classes of Training in the lower class rooms of the large building of the girls High school. As the number of the high school girls increased, separate buildings were constructed for teacher training girls. Separate buildings and campus were built for Nursery, Kindergarten girls. Until 1953 Teacher school remained Higher Grade Training Institute. Miss Evans returned to her motherland in that year. From 1956 onwards it had been upgraded to secondary grade Teacher Training School. In 1957 it was changed onto a Basic Education Training centre. In the Basic Education Training, the students made threads and weaved clothes. They them selves cooked their food. They planted gardens. These activities were given importance in the syllabus thus says Mrs. Ebenezer Jeyaseeli. In 1973 the Basic Education system was removed from the teacher training schools and the training schools were known as Teacher Training Institutes. The certificates which were issued as TSLC were changed as Diploma in Teacher Education. Students from many pastorates are studying here. All the facilities are made to make the students excellent in academic and physical educational activities. The students also participate in spiritual activities like Church Services, Bible competitions and Tests conducted by the Diocese. They are taught to grow in the fear of the Lord according to the Bible verse "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom. The students are not only trained as teachers but also grow in the Lord and are witnesses to Him.

Art Industrial School

The Art Industrial School, Nazareth was established in the year 1878 on 14 November by an early S.P.G. Missionary Cannon Rev. A. Margoschis for imparting vocational training to the inmates of the St. John's orphanage which was established by him in the year 1877 to provide food and shelter to the destitute left behind by the parents who lost their lives in the great famine which devastated this area in that year. In early days training was imparted in various vocational trades like Carpentry, Black smithy. Tailoring, Weaving, Lace making etc. Also the poor orphans were given general education up to VII standard. In the year 1937 these general education classes were shifted to the High Schools for Boys and girls at Nazareth, Subsequently, vocational training was imparted only to boys. The school had earned good reputation in producing wooden furniture for churches, schools, homes. In the year 1947 when India attained independence, the school was taken over by the Church of South India - Tirunelveli Diocese, at which time there were only three trades viz - Carpentry, Black smithy and Tailoring. In the year 1961 the Welder Trade was added. In 1966 with the financial aid from World Council of Church courses in Fitter and Turner trades were added. In order to provide in plant training and to earn funds to become self-supportive, a production unit known as T.D.T.A. Light engineering Work was started in 17 January 1969. In the year 1972 the Philanthropic Organisation Messrs “Bread for the World. West Germany sanctioned a grant of Rs. 19, 46,000 to start A.I.S. Tool Room in place of the T.D.T.A. Light Engineering Works, with machines and equipments imported from abroad and purchased in India. A separate HT Transformer was provided and subsequently a Diesel Engine Generator was set up to overcome the power crisis. In order to provide production oriented advanced training to the trainees of engineering trades the AIS Tool Room was closed. AI School Advanced Training Centre was started with the same workshop, building, machines, equipments etc. in 1981. In the meantime Tool and Die maker Trade was started in 1977. With financial assistance from the Philanthropic organization Messer's FZE, West Germany and SKIP the Art Industrial School ventured to introduce Non-formal Training also for the benefits of the dropouts of elementary and high schools who cannot, though desire, get themselves admitted to any of the formal training courses due to their low educational qualifications and in that the following courses of non-formal training were inaugurated on 18 July 1985 by the Rt. Rev. Jason S. Dharmaraj the bishop in Tirunelveli. a. Village Carpentry - 1 Year duration b. Village Electronics and Motor Rewinding - 11/2 Year duration c. Bore well Rig Operation and Maintenance - 1 Year duration Subsequently on 16 July 1987 non-formal training in Motor Vehicle Mechanic, Two wheeler Mechanism and allied skills were added. As a crown of these courses a well equipped vehicles service center had also been started and the same is very useful to the owners of motor vehicles who previously had to go for servicing their vehicles in far away places like Tirunelveli or Tuticorin. Computerization of workshops had become very essential in the rapidly growing industries of India. Therefore the Institution took steps to provide training facilities on CMC machine also. In order to pave path for this, the A.I.SA.T. Computer Centre was started on 16 July 1987 and the following Formal Training courses are made available for boys and girls. Computer Operator Cum Programming Assist.- 11/2 years Data Preparation Assistant - 1 year Steps have already been taken to get these courses affiliated to National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). Having the State Government recognized courses. NCVT affiliated courses Computer Training Programme and Non-formal Training courses as detailed above, the Art Industrial School; Nazareth is the largest Industrial Training Institute in the Church of South India. This Industrial Institute trainees are accepted for employment in private and public sector industries in India and abroad or they arc able to be self employed to cam their livelihood and thus the institution continues to fulfill the purpose of its establishment and existence. “Work and Pray” is the motto of the School.

Raobahathu Rr. A. Aathuram T.D.T.A. Middle School

The Vaguthankuppam Elementary School was established by Rev. A. Margoschis in 1886 and the classes were held in the mission house. In 1938, Canon Rev. Mose decided to start a school at Manalmedu and he approached Dr. A. Mathuram to support it. With his financial assistance, the land was bought and the building was constructed. As Dr. A. Mathuram belonged to Nazareth, the property of the school land was donated to Nazareth pastorate. By the efforts of Rev. John Samuel, they got Government recognition up to VI Std. It was named T.D.T.A. Mathuram Elementary School in the name of Dr. A. Mathuram. Again by the efforts of Rev. John Samuel VII and VIII classes were recognized. "Dr. Mathuram got the title 'Rao Sahib". Therefore the school was also renamed as TDTA Rao Sahib, Dr. Mathuram Middle School, Canon Rev. S.R. Gnanakkan, in accordance with the change of Dr. Mathuram’s name. It is run well, so that the rural children get their education here.

T.D.T.A Kaspa Primary School

Rev. Hough as a person to be remembered always, as he first started many educational Institutions which bring happiness and pride not only to Nazareth, but also beneficial to south east Tirunelveli. He established a school for boys in 1820 at Nazareth. It was known as St. John's Boys Primary School. It became the model school for the teacher-training institute for men. Later when the teacher-training institute was connected to the teacher-training institute at Palayamkottai, from 1 April 1926 onwards it was known as Kaspa Primary School. It is the oldest among the educational institutions in Nazareth.

St. John's English Primary School

The people of Nazareth felt the need of an English Medium School to enable the pupils to avail themselves of English Medium facilities in Margoschis Boys School and St. John's Girls Hr. Sec. School, Nazareth. To meet this need Rev. A. Draviam Jesudasan who was then in charge of the Nazareth Pastorate, took great efforts to establish an English Medium School in Nazareth the Pastorate Committee members were enlightened by him and started an English Medium Kindergarten School on 6th June 1977. Rev. A. Draviam Jesudasan started L.K.G. U.K.G. And I Std. Classes with strength of only seventy children, four staff members helped by two attenders. Then the kindergarten building was dedicated and declared open in the TDTA Kaspa Primary School premises on 6th June 1977 by the bishop Rt. Rev. S. Daniel Abraham Within a period of (two years Rev. A. Draviam Jesudasan moved the Kindergarten school to the newly built building near the church. The welfare committee and the Pastorate committee are working for the uplift of the school. The Pastorate Chairman of Nazareth as the Manager of the school takes every effort for the welfare of the school. The sanitary condition is also well kept. In the Baby class (Pre KG) there are some playthings for the children to play with.
